About Us

Meiho University’s Food Science and Nutrition Department is an inclusive community of scholars committed to academic excellence in the teaching, learning and investigation of the Food and Nutrition sciences.

The department’s scholarly and supportive culture creates the optimal environment for scientific learning and exploration. A breadth of opportunities awaits students in the Department of Food Science and Nutrition. With Bachelor degree and associate degree, the department prepares students for careers in nutritionist, nutritional therapist, food product development scientist, food labeling specialist, food safety auditor and more.

All the department, faculty and staff are committed to student’s success. We desire students not only to learn theory and understand why theories are important but also to learn how to apply the theoretical frameworks in practice. Students will enhance learning by integrating theory and practice. It is imperative that students in professional programs be able to put into practice what they have learned in the classroom.

Department Goals and Objectives

Consistent with the university’s mission, the goals and objectives of the Department of Food Science and Nutrition involve the achievement of goals in six major areas of student growth, learning and community outreach.

Facilities

Food Science Technology Examination Service Center

In order to build effective knowledge base in the examination services and to strengthen testing and inspection techniques, the department established “Agricultural & Aquacultural Products Analysis Service Center”. The service center also undertakes corporate social responsibility in food safety examination and contributes to the health and welfare of society.

Computer labs and testing laboratory

Campus computer labs are available to students. Several of the labs are available for reservation for instruction or special events. In addition to general use labs, the department manages testing labs with access limited to the department’s faculty and students.

Faculty

Our faculty members are student-focused and committed to offering outstanding learning experiences with individualized attention. Support for student success is always close by. The professional advisor will guide students in selecting coursework to fit interests and career goals, and students can connect with fellow students at student union events. Supplemental instruction support is available to all department students at no cost.

Major's Specialty

1.Students not only learn the theoretical knowledge but also understand how to apply the theoretical frameworks in practice.

2.Students have to participate in projects with industry. The projects can offer practical learning opportunities to help students bridge the gap between classroom instruction and challenges facing real businesses.

3.Students have to be eligible for certain certificates in Food Science and Nutrition before graduation.

4.Students are encouraged to think globally and act locally.

5.Students are required to have intermediate level in English and Japanese in order to participate effectively and actively in the global community and to develop global competence. Students need appropriate global competence to participate as empathetic, engaged, and effective citizens of the world.

Academic and Career Counseling

After graduation, students may

1.Work as a researcher or developing personnel in domestic or international food science technology companies or factories

2.Work as a quality inspector, administrative managers or salespersons in food related business

3.Be employed in medical related fields and work as a professional nutritionists.

4.Take the civil service exam to become a food scientist and work for the Dept. of Public Health
